Environmental Assessment and Management in ASM – Guidance Paper Released

In many regulatory systems, environmental impact assessment processes and management requirements for artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) are too onerous and are not realistically achievable by governments or miners.

CIRDI has prepared a guidance document to address this challenge that outlines a process to assess and manage the environmental impacts of artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) for governments and miners. The approach focuses on incremental and achievable environmental outcomes at individual ASM mines. It is based on a combined approach, with roles for both governments and miners, that considers the resources and capacities of both groups.

The guidance paper includes case studies that span two continents: Yukon’s Placer Mining Regime – ASM in Canada and Regulating Tailings Disposal of ASM Operations in  Souther Ecuador.

The paper is available on CIRDI’s website and will be shared as part of a CIRDI-hosted panel – Environmental Impact Assessment for ASM-LSM – at Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) in Geneva this week.

The paper was prepared by Dr. Rob Stevens, CIRDI’s director of partnerships and learning with contributions by Andrew Duthie of Hatfield Consultants and Bernardo Ranieri, PhD Fellow, University of British Columbia Department of Mining Engineering.
