CIRDI’s government partners in the West African Economic and Monetary Union (UEMOA) share a vision of mining as an opportunity for broad socioeconomic development, not merely as a source of income.
In this project, CIRDI works with governments in Burkina Faso and Senegal to help strengthen extractive sector governance through a multi-ministerial, multi-sector and multi-stakeholder approach.
The governments have requested assistance from CIRDI, as a neutral partner, to help develop and implement an integrated approach that will strengthen national and sub-regional institutions. The project aims to optimize mining as a vector for broad socioeconomic development by fostering dialogue and cooperation between the multiple stakeholders in central governments, the mining sector, universities and civil society. It delivers capacity-building at all levels of government and civil society and facilitates multi-party dialogue at local, national and regional levels. As a strategy to promote shared and integrated social responsibility, CIRDI also provides practical training as necessary on sustainable mining development issues.
Using a transparent, integrated and sustainable approach to mining governance, the project encompasses:
- Legislative, policy and regulatory frameworks.
- Capacity and institution building.
- Environmental and social management.
- Artisanal and small-scale mining.
- Economic strengthening and diversification.
- Shared and integrated social responsibility between all actors of society.
