Economic Diversification and Community Development of Artisanal Mining Towns Workshop (February 2014)

This workshop was convened in February 2014 to discuss and introduce initiatives related to economic development and diversification of businesses in the El Oro province, particularly in the municipalities of Portovelo, Zaruma, Atualpa and Piñas. The workshop was organized at the request of the community and in partnership with CIRDI, the University of British Columbia, SEF Canada, INIGEMM, APROPLASMIN and the Embassy of Canada. Community members and government representatives discussed business opportunities and local entrepreneurship programs that promote local economic diversification. The workshop included multi-stakeholder discussions regarding post-mining activities in communities where mining is the dominant economic driver. It also discussed economic diversification to reduce a community’s dependency of on mining and improve its sustainability by expanding and developing other business activity.
